In a quiet classroom during Jain (Deemed-to-Be University) Kochi’s busy Summit of Future, a small group was gathered in a circle, ready to try out something new and unique. They were part of a workshop on Movement Therapy, led by Mrs. Susheela Pai from the Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (CMTAI). Unlike the intense discussions and sessions held around the summit, this workshop offered a space for self-expression, connection, and emotional healing through movement.
The Creative Movement Therapy Facilitator began her session with simple breathing exercises. Eyes closed, participants focused on the rhythm of their breath, bringing their conscience to the present. A round of introductions followed, each person sharing their name and a unique greeting. Laughter and hesitant smiles filled the space as Mrs. Pai guided them through more icebreakers, easing the tensions out. Through all these icebreakers, she ensured that everyone was vocal and maintained eye contact with each other.
She explained that movement therapy is about being fully present, something we tend to lose in the rush of daily life. Through guided activities, she encouraged the group to step out of their thoughts and into their bodies, using movement as a tool for awareness and emotional release.
A mirroring exercise had participants pairing up, copying each other’s gestures. What started as simple motions soon became fluid, almost like a non-verbal conversation. It was a moment of trust, of truly seeing and being seen. Later, simple choreography and movement interpretation allowed them to further explore their emotions through gestures.

Movement therapy, as Mrs. Pai explained, is more than just physical activity. It is a way to release emotions and find clarity, also helping the patients buld their confidence bit by bit. Whether dealing with stress, anxiety, or simply seeking a deeper connection with oneself, movement can be a powerful tool.
As the session came to a close, participants stood together, breathing in unison. They had come as strangers, leaving with a newfound sense of awareness. In a summit filled with discussions and ideas, this workshop reminded everyone of the importance of pausing, feeling, and just moving.
