There is a purpose to start a newspaper and it should not be diluted, M V Shreyams Kumar, Managing Director of Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Co. Limited said during a discussion on the future of media at the JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) in Kochi on Wednesday.

“Media houses should be financially strong to overcome pressure from different quarters,” he said in an interaction with journalist and content strategist Anjana George.

Kumar said content is the strong point of Mathrubhumi and his organisation is planning to build on it.

Talking about how people reacted to the advertorial published by JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) a day before the inauguration of the Summit of Future, he said: “The reaction from the public to the advertisement gave us confidence. We are happy that people are reacting to an advertorial in a newspaper,” he said.

The futuristic advertorial featured the front page of a newspaper in 2050.

On the selection of news in the digital space, he said an algorithm is working behind it. “Mathrubhumi is read by 13 million people, and our news selection on issues are not based on algorithms. We are committed to give voice to the voiceless,” he said.

He said news presentation in visual media has become a performance. “I don’t personally like the news presentation in our visual media,” he said.
