JAIN (Deemed-to-be) University honoured Padma Bhushan awardee and renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Jose Chacko Periapuram on the final day of the Summit of Future in Kochi on Saturday.

Pro Vice-Chancellor J. Letha presented a Ponnada to Dr. Jose Chacko.

Later, addressing a session on ‘Global Well-being for a Harmonious Future’, Dr Jose Chacko emphasised that happiness begins within each individual. “Share a little of what you have with others, and it will bring you happiness,” he said.

He highlighted the link between individual and collective happiness. “Happy individuals create a happy nation, and a happy nation contributes to a joyful world,” he noted, and added: “We derive happiness from what we do.”

Dr. Jose also reminisced about performing Kerala’s first heart transplant in 2003, recalling the challenges his team faced.

“In 2003, we carried out Kerala’s first heart transplant, but it was fraught with difficulties. My biggest source of courage came from my patient himself,” he shared.

“I told him that I had never performed a heart transplant before. But he reassured me, saying he would stand by me. That confidence gave me the strength to go ahead with the surgery.”
