On Wednesday, a diverse group of designers, artists, musicians, advertising experts, and innovators gathered at JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) to discuss various aspects of design and creativity.
India’s leading fashion guru, Prasad Bidapa, emphasised the country’s immense design potential.

“India is on the cusp of greatness. It is a vast treasure trove of design,” he said during a panel discussion on ‘Fashion Talk: Importance of Innovation in Fashion’. “However, we lack a focused plan. There aren’t significant investments in design, even though the world recognises India as a future global market leader.”
Speaking on innovation, Bidapa cautioned against innovation for its own sake. “In India, bridal wear is a lucrative business, but scaling it up is a challenge,” he noted.
He also raised concerns about competition from China, which replicates Kanchipuram and Banarasi sarees and sells them for as little as ₹500. “Indian designers must elevate their work to the global stage, and innovation must be approached with care,” he added.

Fashion designer Suket Dhir expressed optimism about India’s fashion industry, highlighting that artisans are finally receiving their due recognition despite the rise of artificial intelligence. “AI will have a positive impact on fashion,” he said.
Fashion stylist Sujith Sudhakaran, meanwhile, underscored the importance of accessibility in fashion. “I always think about what the common man can contribute,” he said.
