Use Free Software, Fight for Freedom

Dr Richard Stallman, Founder of GNU Project and Free Software Foundation, has said that individuals should fight for protecting their freedom in the digital age. “My freedom is more important than browsing a website that steals data from me,” said Stallman while delivering a keynote address on ‘Software and Freedom in Digital Society’ on the second day of the Summit of Future, organised by JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) in Kochi on Monday.

He said everyone should fight to protect their freedom. “Using free software is one of the options in this fight,” he said.

He discarded the entire idea of Artificial Intelligence, and stated that ‘Artificial Stupidity’ is the apt term to describe the phenomenon. “ChatGPT should not be called Artificial Intelligence. The system knows how to play with sentences. It knows which sentences fit together. Anyone transmitting ChatGPT-generated content should state that the output was from a ‘bullshit’ generator,” he said.

Stallman said free software development is an ongoing project and hundreds of volunteers are working worldwide on free software projects. “Universities that teach software engineering should teach reverse engineering projects too. It will help students make the world better.”

Talking about his journey, he said he was part of the free software movement since the 1970s. “After its collapse, I was left with nothing to look forward to. So I joined the GNU movement so that I could fight for a cause.”

During the interaction, Stallman auctioned a miniature model of GNU for Rs 6,000.
