The overuse of antibiotics is one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today, noted renowned public health activist Dr. S. S. Lal.
“Excessive use of antibiotics leads to resistance in human bodies, drastically reducing the number of effective treatment options. In 2023, antimicrobial resistance was responsible for 4.7 million deaths,” said Dr. Lal, director of ReAct Asia-Pacific, an organisation dedicated to raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance.
He warned that the overuse of antibiotics in both humans and animals could also contaminate agricultural produce. “Antibiotics enter the soil through human and animal excreta, leading to contamination of farm produce,” he explained.

Dr. Lal emphasised the importance of using antibiotics responsibly to combat resistance. “Antibiotics should never be purchased without a prescription from a qualified medical practitioner, and they must be taken in the correct dosage,” he advised.
